He worked as a stone mason for a hot summer. It was the most difficult job he had ever done. It was also the most rewarding work that he had ever done. Matthew loved the feeling of the stone in his hand, and the idea that he had built something that would last. He was a firm believer in craftmanship. The population was 31,578 at the 2010 census. == History == The hamlet of Centereach was first called West Middle Island, but primarily became known as New Village until the early 20th century. When it was discovered that another town shared the same name in Upstate New York, the name was changed to Centereach in 1916.
